The Best All-In-One POS System for Small Businesses

Vend is an affordable, scalable POS system that gives you a choice of payment processors to work with and is compatible with third-party POS hardware, which means if you already own equipment, you may be able to continue using it. It also partners with a variety of companies to offer add-ons, such as appointment-scheduling features that make it a good option for retail stores, salons and other professional service-based businesses.

Vend is packed with features at a price that’s very friendly to small businesses. Like most of the top POS systems, Vend charges a monthly subscription fee for its software and doesn’t require you to sign a long-term service contract, so you can cancel at any time without incurring an expensive fee.

Vend is transparent with its pricing. You can see the subscription rates for its four plans on its website. Vend is one of the few POS systems that has a free plan, which is a valuable service for businesses that are just getting off the ground. This plan is also a good option if you want to test-drive Vend longer than the trial period allows. It supports a single register, 10 products and up to 1,000 customers. However, it doesn’t come with email or phone support.

The Starter plan costs $69 per month and supports one register, three users, and an unlimited number of products and customers. It includes reporting and inventory features and gives you 24/7 access to customer support via email and chat.

The Advanced plan costs $99 per month (or $79 per month if you pay annually rather than month to month). In addition to the Starter plan feature, it comes with a loyalty program, Vend Ecommerce and advanced reporting. It also allows you to add more registers for $49 each per month and priority phone support for $19 per month.

If you have multiple locations, you’ll need the Multi-Outlet plan, which costs $249 per month (or $199 per month if you pay annually). It includes all the features of the Advanced plan plus priority phone support and the tools to manage your reporting, inventory and customers across all of your locations.

One thing small businesses love about Vend is its simple, intuitive interface. It doesn’t require much training to understand how the software works, and because Vend is cloud-based, you can easily use it through the browser on any computer with internet access. It also runs on iPads, and you can connect them with POS equipment like barcode scanners, printers, cash drawers and credit card readers. As mentioned above, the software is compatible with third-party hardware, and you can find a list of compatible equipment on the company’s website to make sure the pieces you already own or plan to buy will work with the system.

Of the systems we tested and considered, Vend’s software is among the easiest to use. We like the navigation system of the back office, which uses a simple menu bar along the left side of the screen that lets you easily identify all the different areas of the software.

A guided tour launches when you first sign in to Vend. This helped us to easily find our way around the system instead of exploring blindly. If you get stuck on a specific function, each section of the dashboard gives quick access to help resources and tutorial videos, which we thought was a nice touch.

Setup is a breeze. Vend lets you upload data using CSV lists (created on Excel or Google Docs), so there’s no need to manually enter information into the software. Uploadable data can include product lists, price books, SKUs and customer information. If you don’t have CSV files available, you can manually add barcoded products to the system using a USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner. If you have a Shopify online store, the Shopify add-on (more about add-ons below) comes with a one-step import feature to quickly transfer your data.

As an all-in-one POS system, Vend is jam-packed with features to help small businesses grow. In addition to processing transactions, Vend has a strong mix of tools to help you manage inventory and customers, as well as reporting features that help you analyze your business’s performance and integrations that allow you to add more functions to the system.

Credit card processing. You can integrate your credit card processor with this POS system, and Vend gives you several processors to choose from, allowing you to shop for the best rates and terms. U.S.-based businesses can work with Square, Vantiv or PayPal. Each of these systems can provide you with payment terminals and mobile card readers that allow you to accept EMV and magnetic stripe cards as well as mobile wallets such as Apple Pay. You can work with a different merchant account provider if you prefer, though instead of integrating it with the system, you use your payment terminal or mobile card reader alongside it. Though this isn’t as convenient, it’s a good option if you’re under contract or want to continue working with your current processor.

Inventory management. Vend’s inventory tools let you automate all types of tasks, such as product counts, low-stock alerts and reordering when your stock reaches a preset threshold. This saves you from constantly checking inventory manually. With the Multi-Outlet plan, you can check inventory levels at each location and transfer items between stores.

Product management. Vend makes it easy to manage products. You can add, update and remove products, as well as input stock and tax information. It supports product variations, such as sizes and colors, and composites, such as bundles or gift baskets. One feature we like in particular is that Vend lets you create custom pricing options based on different criteria – for instance, preset discounts based on special promotions, locations and customer types – which saves you time while minimizing errors and lost sales opportunities.

Customer database and loyalty program. You can capture customer contact information as you’re ringing up a sale, or if you already have a customer database, you can upload it to Vend using a CSV file. With Vend’s reporting tools, you can see who your best customers are and create organized customer lists that include a myriad of data – such as contact information, purchase histories, payment histories and account balances – that you can use to target customer groups for more effective marketing campaigns.

With the Advanced and Multi-Outlet plans, Vend has a built-in loyalty program that helps you boost sales by turning first-time buyers into repeat customers. You can add customers to the loyalty program at checkout or email them an invitation to sign up. You can customize the program to assign loyalty points to all products, or set custom point amounts for certain products if, for example, you’re running a promotion on select items.

Email marketing integrations are also available, allowing you to connect to third-party programs through this POS system.

Real-time reporting. Reporting tools that help you analyze your sales data are key to understanding how your store is performing so you can make wise business decisions. You can generate real-time reports based on preset metrics or create customized reports based on the information you need to identify your most profitable products, best customers, top salespeople, sales trends and more. You can set goals for your sales team or let each sales rep create and track his or her own targets.

Third-party integrations. One of the features that makes an all-in-one POS system truly complete is the ability to integrate with programs and services your business already uses. This capability can save you tons of time by automatically syncing your data across programs so you don’t have to manually import or enter it by hand. Vend can connect to accounting software Xero and QuickBooks to automatically import sales data into your books, reconcile daily sales with bank accounts, create custom invoices and more. Integrations are also available for advanced inventory management, email marketing, staff management, e-commerce, appointment scheduling and more.

Vend offers 24/7 customer support via email and live chat with all paid plans, though you’ll need the Advanced plan if you want to add priority phone support to your subscription, or the Multi-Outlet plan, which includes this service. When we called the company as a small business owner considering a POS system, the representative we spoke with was friendly and professional, patiently answering our many questions about the system. We didn’t feel at all rushed or that the rep was pushing the sale, which is a huge plus in our book.

In addition to live support, Vend offers several resources that you can use if you need help or want to learn more about the system and its features:

  • Help center. Search this knowledgebase for answers to your questions about Vend. You can also read how-to articles, getting-started guides and FAQs. This section also includes video tutorials and a community forum.
  • Vend U. Vend University gives retailers access to on-demand training courses, demo videos, live webinars, a retail newsletter, events and other resources to help you grow a successful business.
  • On-site assistance. Vend has a global network of partners, training professionals and suppliers. So, if Vend can’t come to you, there is likely a local Vend expert who can personally help you. These services cost extra, however.

Although we consider Vend the best all-in-one POS system, there are some limitations to consider before selecting this system for your business: Vend’s e-commerce capabilities and the extra cost for phone support, professional setup and training services.

E-commerce. Vend has its own e-commerce solution called Vend Ecommerce. It lets you create your own online store that syncs with your in-store POS sales, inventory and other data. However, this feature isn’t available on the base plan. You’ll need to subscribe to either the Advanced or Multi-Outlet plan to use Vend Ecommerce. An alternative is to use Shopify for your online store, which Vend easily integrates with using any of the plans. This feature has mixed reviews, however; some business owners say they were able to set it up without a hitch, though others (including those we spoke with) said they had some trouble getting it to work.

Priority phone support: If you want to contact customer support by phone 24/7, you’ll have to subscribe to the Advanced plan and pay $19 per month on top of the monthly subscription. Otherwise, you’re limited to emailing and chatting with customer support agents, though this access is also available 24/7 with the Starter plan.

Here’s the procedure to Accept Credit Card Online, In-Store or Anywhere

Choosing a company that helps you accept credit cards can be challenging, and there are several factors to consider before selecting a service. To find the most convenient and least expensive route between your customer’s credit card and your bank account, you want to look for low rates, few fees and month-to-month service contracts.

First, identify how you do business with your customer:

  • Card present: In-person transactions that use a POS system, credit card terminal or mobile card reader
  • Card not present: Remote transactions conducted online or over the phone

Once you decide that, you can determine what type of processor to work with:

  • ISO/MSP or direct processor: These companies can set you up with a merchant account. ISO/MSPs include companies such as Payline Data, Flagship Merchant Services and Helcim. Direct processors include Chase Paymentech, Vantiv and Elavon. This type of processor is a good choice for a business that processes more than $3,000 per month.
  • Payment facilitator or merchant aggregator: These companies sponsor merchants under their master merchant accounts and are often classified as mobile credit card processors. Generally, this type of processor works best for very small businesses that process less than $3,000 per month. If you process more than that, you may qualify for better rates from an ISO/MSP. Payment facilitators include Square and PayPal.

Next, you need to decide how you’re going to accept payments and what type of processing equipment you need. Here are four basic ways to accept credit cards:

  • A complete checkout terminal typically includes a tablet or touchscreen, a cash drawer and a receipt printer. Barcode scanners and other peripherals may also be added.
  • It connects to or is used alongside a credit card reader.
  • Best for businesses with a physical location, particularly those that want to connect to other business systems such as accounting or inventory.
  • A portable device and/or app that lets you accept credit cards anywhere using a smartphone or tablet.
  • Can be used as a stand-alone device or connect to a point-of-sale system.
  • Best for businesses that sell in a variety of places, want to process transactions from anywhere in the store or only run a few transactions each day at a physical location.
  • A piece of hardware used exclusively to accept credit cards. It is usually provided by or purchased from a merchant account provider.
  • Should be able to read both EMV chip and magnet stripe cards and include NFC technology so you can accept mobile wallet payments.

What is it? Merchant account service providers are independent sales organizations, merchant service providers (ISO/MSPs) or direct processors. They provide you with a merchant account and then act as middlemen between your business and your customer’s credit card company or bank. They process payments and make sure the money is appropriately withdrawn from a credit card account and placed into your business’s merchant account. Once the money clears all of the processing protocols, it can be transferred from your merchant account to your business’s regular bank account. Who should use it: Businesses processing more than $3,000 per month, including brick-and-mortar, mobile and online businesses.

Equipment: Merchant services providers offer businesses a variety of equipment for accepting debit and credit cards, including point-of-sale systems, PIN pad and wireless payment terminals, and mobile card readers. Most processors give businesses the option to rent, lease or buy processing equipment. Business owners can often also purchase the equipment from third-party vendors or use the POS hardware they already own, though the processor may need to reprogram terminals and may charge a fee for this service.

Cost: Merchant accounts are more costly than aggregated credit card processing accounts, and they typically charge several monthly fees in addition to per-transaction rates. Because the rates can vary widely among providers, it’s important that business owners shop around for the best deal. For each transaction, you’ll pay a percentage of the sale (anywhere between 0.5 percent and 5 percent) plus a per-transaction fee (usually between 10 and 30 cents). Most processors use the tiered pricing model to calculate your processing costs, but industry experts recommend the interchange-plus pricing model, as it’s more transparent. You want to ask which pricing model the company uses when you call for a pricing quote.

  • Tiered pricing is a good option if your customers typically pay in person using debit cards, though it can be expensive if they prefer to use premium rewards or corporate credit cards. You want to ask how many tiers there are, the rate for each tier, and which type of card and acceptance method are grouped into each tier. There are usually three tiers: qualified, mid-qualified and non-qualified.
  • Interchange-plus is a good option if your customers typically pay using credit cards. With this model, the processor passes on to you the published interchange rates the credit card network charge and adds a markup percentage and per-transaction fee. Keep in mind that when you receive a quote for this pricing model, it’s the markup percentage and per-transaction fee only that you’ll receive, and for each transaction, you’ll pay this amount on top of the interchange rate.

Additionally, you’ll pay regular fees for your account. These typically include the following:

  • Monthly statement fee ($10 on average)
  • Monthly minimum fee ($25 on average)
  • Monthly gateway fee (usually $5 to $15)
  • Annual PCI compliance fee (usually $99)

Scott Blum, vice president at Total Merchant Services, said there are three areas small businesses should consider: upfront costs, processing rates and contracts.

“All three should be evaluated before settling on a credit card processor,” Blum said. “Small businesses need a clear understanding of the upfront cost to get the equipment they need, such as a terminal, then ongoing processing rates should be affordable. These are typically expressed as a percentage of sales. Finally, small businesses should not be locked into a long-term contract.”

In terms of rates, Benny Silberstein, chief operating officer at Benchmark Merchant Solutions, said a swipe rate of 1.79 percent and a keyed-in rate of 2.25 percent (for e-commerce) are considered affordable rates for small businesses.

Silberstein advises, however, that businesses should sacrifice small percentage rate savings for higher flat fees.

“The math won’t add up,” he said. “Once your business starts doing enough volume where the percentages are significant, it’s time to renegotiate!”

Additionally, Silberstein recommends that small business owners ask vendors what other businesses in their industry are currently paying, if there are any setup or equipment costs, and whether their rates will change anytime soon.

Security: Blum said that providers should be EMV-compliant and adhere to the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standards, the debit and credit card industry’s rules and regulations for how credit card information should be handled, used and stored. The standards set the framework for prevention, detection and reaction to security incidents. Businesses that don’t comply with the PCI security standards face significant fines from the networks they accept cards from, such as Visa and MasterCard. Silberstein adds that credit card processors should also offer end-to-end (E2E) encryption, which ensures that data is protected as it travels from the credit reader to its destination.

Pros and cons: The benefit of using a merchant services provider is that it can fulfill your business’s credit card acceptance needs and continue to do so as your business grows. Merchant services providers also offer necessary tools, such as merchant account management and fraud protection. As it’s an all-in-one solution, the main drawback is its costs, which is one of the reasons some businesses don’t accept credit cards. Businesses should do their research and make sure they get the most cost-effective merchant account rates and fees, with low upfront equipment costs and a flexible contract with month-to-month terms.

What to look for: When we spoke to small business owners about credit card processing and merchant accounts, the best advice they gave is to look for a vendor with simple, upfront pricing and to always read the fine print. This means that swipe fee percentages and per-transaction rates, monthly fees and minimums, the annual PCI compliance fee, and other numbers should be crystal clear so you’re not faced with any unpleasant surprises.

Knowing your contract terms is also critical. Make sure the vendor makes the terms clear so you don’t end up in a multiyear contract with a steep early-termination fee. Other factors to consider include the merchant account approval process, the startup costs for processing equipment, and the customer service options provided. For businesses that want to sell products or services via their website, it’s important to make sure the merchant services provider has all the internet-based features you need, such as virtual terminals and payment gateways.

Blum added that small businesses should also look for well-rounded solutions that allow you to accept payments from all channels: online, face-to-face and mobile payment apps. They should also ask vendors if they’re set up to take new payment types – specifically, NFC for mobile wallets such as Apple Pay – and if they offer value-added components, such as growth capabilities and features like special offers, gift cards and loyalty programs.

Who should use it: Mobile credit card processors are best suited for merchants who want to be able to accept credit cards anytime, anyplace. Some examples are repair people, food trucks and street vendors, as well as brick-and-mortar stores that want the option to accept credit and debit cards away from the cash register. If you process less than $3,000 per month, merchant aggregators may be less expensive, since they usually don’t charge monthly and annual account fees. If you process more than $3,000 per month, a merchant services provider (ISO/MSP or direct processor) may be more cost-effective, despite monthly and annual account fees, as their processing rates are lower. You may also prefer to work with a merchant account services provider for your mobile credit card processing if you have irregular sales ticket sizes.

Equipment: Mobile businesses need their own equipment to swipe credit cards, just as retail stores do. To accept credit cards via mobile devices, you’ll need a compatible smartphone or tablet, a card reader that plugs directly into the device or connects via Bluetooth, and the accompanying app from the provider. The smartphone or tablet then functions as a credit card payment terminal.

Cost: Merchant aggregators usually charge a higher swipe rate, and although some don’t charge a per-transaction fee, those that do may charge a higher amount as well. However, most don’t charge monthly fees, monthly minimums and PCI compliance fees. Merchant account services providers change the same rates and fees for mobile credit card processing as they do for card-present processing at brick-and-mortar locations. If you already accept credit cards at your business, you can talk with your processor about purchasing mobile card readers to add to your system.

Security: In addition to obeying the PCI Data Security Standards, the best mobile credit card apps encrypt card data as soon as it’s received. The apps are password-protected and include additional safety measures in case the mobile device is lost or stolen.

Pros and cons: The ability to accept credit cards anywhere benefits both businesses and consumers. Not only does it promise significant revenue streams, but the convenience also enables businesses to provide better and faster customer service. By having mobility options, you’re free to collect payments from anywhere in the store, not just at the cash register – Apple and Nordstrom do this, for example. The major drawback is that there are still costs to consider; in addition to processing costs, you’ll need to provide a smartphone or tablet to use with each mobile card reader. Business owners need to weigh their need for accepting credit and debit cards wirelessly versus the cost to do so.

What to look for: Both merchant aggregators and merchant service providers offer mobile credit card processing, so it is important to compare your options before choosing a processor. According to the small business owners we spoke with, important considerations include transaction rates and monthly fees, and the type of equipment the processor offers. If you already have iOS or Android tablets and phones you intend to use, you need to make sure the app and the card readers are compatible. The transaction features mobile business owners should look for include the ability to capture signatures directly onto a mobile device, calculate sales tax, accept tips, manage customer contact and sales information, and email or text receipts.

What is it? Who should use it: POS systems are ideal for businesses with physical locations that have medium- to high-volume sales, such as retailers, restaurants, spas and salons.

Payment processing: Most POS system vendors allow you to choose which payment processor you use; however, while some work with nearly every U.S.-based processor, others give you limited options. Some POS companies, such as Square and Harbortouch, also provide credit card processing services and require you to use them in order to use their POS systems. Others that provide processing may allow you to work with another processor, but charge either a monthly fee or a per-transaction surcharge for the privilege. If you’re under contract with a processor or there’s a specific processor you want to use, you should ask them which POS systems they’re compatible with. Alternatively, you can use the processor alongside the POS system of your choice, though this isn’t as convenient as using one that integrates with the system.

POS software: Cloud-based software as a service is the most popular option for POS systems. Although you pay a monthly fee, you receive regular updates and can access the back office from any browser, allowing you to check on your sales and run reports when you’re away from the office. Some companies still offer software licenses, which have a one-time or annual fee, and this can be a good option if you don’t have reliable internet service.

POS equipment: There are two types of POS systems: traditional and mobile. Traditional POS systems typically come with some combination of a credit card reader, touchscreen monitor, receipt printer and cash register. Mobile POS systems allow you to use your own iPad or tablet and come with a tablet stand and a card reader that plugs into a headphone jack or connects via Bluetooth. Cost: The cost of POS systems varies depending on the type of POS software you choose, whether you purchase or lease your hardware, and which processor you work with. Here are the different costs to keep in mind:

  • Equipment costs (varies, may be purchased or leased): Industry experts recommend purchasing hardware outright, as leasing can be extremely expensive and most leasing contracts are noncancelable, which means you’re on the hook for lease payments until the contract expires, even if your business closes.
  • Setup and installation fees (if applicable): Most POS companies don’t charge for remote setup assistance, but it can be expensive if you need the company to provide on-site installation and training.
  • Monthly software subscription fee or software license purchase
  • Early-termination fees: If your credit card processing service or POS software has a lengthy contract, this can cost up to several hundred dollars. The best companies offer month-to-month service, allowing you to cancel at any time without incurring this fee.

Security: Like other credit card processing services, POS systems include security protocols that support PCI compliance. Mobile POS systems have even more stringent security. They encrypt card and transaction data, regularly back up data, and protect the apps with passwords. They also have remote wiping in the event that devices are stolen.

Pros and cons: The biggest benefit of using a POS system is that it offers an all-in-one solution for processing transactions, managing sales, and running the front and back end of your business. They often come with robust software that lets you sync data – such as inventory, financial reports and customer information – with other software your business already uses, saving you the time of manual data entry. You also have mobile options, so you can take your POS system with you wherever you go. Additionally, there are POS systems designed for specific types of businesses – whether you own a restaurant, shop, salon or spa, there’s a POS system for you.

There are some drawbacks, however. As with some credit card processors, you may have to sign a long-term contract that comes with a hefty early-termination fee. You’ll also have to consider setup and training time, especially for teaching employees how to use the software and equipment. And because there are several types of POS systems and features, you’ll need to do your homework to figure out which types of equipment and software are right for your business.

“Before deciding on a POS system, it’s important to determine your small business’s needs and make sure that your POS has what you need to succeed,” said John Shapiro, director of product management for Payments at Intuit.

Shapiro says there are three things to look for in a POS system:

  1. Determine the needs of your business: It’s important that the POS has the capabilities and features that matter to you. You also want to ensure that your POS system provides an integrated solution by syncing with the other sources of data in your business, like your accounting software, to give you a consolidated view of your sales, payments, inventory, CRM and payroll.
  2. Anytime, anywhere access: Unless you want to be chained to your store, pick a solution that allows you to connect from wherever you are, whenever you want. You may want to view your sales, inventory or even staffing data from the office, at home or on the road.
  3. Know who you’re working with: Your POS is going to be a business-critical part of your life. Make sure you select a trustworthy vendor and confirm how your POS processes credit card transactions, since that’s often done by a third party.

We also asked small business owners what to look for in a POS system. They said the “perfect” POS system saves you time and makes it easier to run your business. This means looking for transaction rates that are affordable and suitable for your sales volume, using equipment and software that are easy to use and train employees on, ensuring seamless integration with other parts of your business (e.g., apps or processes), and choosing the type of POS system that’s best suited for your type of business, business goals and customer preferences.

Cost: Most processors, including both merchant aggregators or merchant account service providers, can provide credit card processing services to online businesses. A merchant aggregator charges higher transaction fees, but usually doesn’t charge monthly or annual fees; this type of processor can be cost-effective for businesses that process a low volume of transactions (under $3,000) each month. However, if you process more than this, a merchant account services provider can save you money because transaction rates are lower, even though it charges monthly and annual fees. No matter which type of processor you work with, transaction rates are higher for online processing (also called card-not-present processing) because you aren’t physically accepting the credit card in person and the risks of fraud are greater.

Security: Credit card processors are proactive with their online security measures and have encryption protocols in place to keep your data secure. As with card-present processing, you’re required to abide by the PCI Data Security Standards, and you’ll need to establish your compliance if you work with a merchant account services provider.

Connecting to your online store: You can connect the payment processing service to your website in a few different ways. Some processors provide a hosted payment page that you can link to from your website. Others offer shopping carts or gateway APIs that your developer can use to integrate payment acceptance with your website. Alternatively, some processors offer online stores with integrated payment processing that you can customize and use as your website.

Pros and cons: The major benefit of accepting credit cards online is that it makes it easy for your customers to do business with you. If you already have a retail presence, it gives you another revenue stream. The drawback is that transaction fees are higher for online sales than for card-present transactions, no matter which type of processor you use. E-commerce businesses also have an increased chance of chargebacks, since typical reasons that a customer will dispute the charge include delivery failures, technical errors and dissatisfaction.

What to look for: Small business owners said there are four main things to look for in an online credit card processor:

  • Easy to integrate into an online store. There should be no tech skills required; you should be able to cut and paste a code to integrate the processing service with your online store, blog or website.
  • Provides e-commerce solutions. The vendor should make it easy to run your online business by providing a shopping cart, buy buttons and, if you don’t already have a website, even a website builder or customizable online store.

Does a Hostile Workplace Make Your Employee Miserable?

Imagine waking up every day and going to a workplace where you felt uncomfortable or even unsafe. That’s the reality for 20 percent of the American workforce, according to a survey of more than 3,000 employees.

The research, conducted by Rand Corp., Harvard Medical School and the University of California, Los Angeles, revealed that 1 in 5 workers faces hostile conditions at work, including behaviors like sexual harassment and bullying. This type of abuse is disproportionately directed at public-facing workers who deal with customers and clients directly, researchers found.

Additionally, about 55 percent of workers say they face “unpleasant and potentially hazardous” conditions, which includes frequently inhaling dangerous particles like dust or smoke and handling chemical products. About half of the respondents also reported that their work spills over into their personal lives, either in the form of doing work in their free time or in unpredictable schedule changes.

“To us, it is kind of a very interesting and somewhat striking portrait of what people go through on a daily basis,” Nicole Maestas, an adjunct economist at Rand Corp. and co-author of the study, told Business News Daily.

It isn’t all doom and gloom, though: Researchers found that American workers have a great deal of autonomy in their work. About 80 percent of respondents said they are able to solve problems and formulate their own ideas on the job. And a majority said their bosses are supportive of them (58 percent) and that they have good friends at work (56 percent).

“A substantial proportion of workers is exposed to an adverse physical and social work environment and is subject to high pressure and hours variations that spill over into personal lives,” the study’s authors wrote. “At the same time, many workers say that they have latitude over how they do their jobs, and a majority feel supported by their coworkers and bosses.”

The researchers will expand their body of data in 2018, as well as follow up with respondents from the 2015 survey, Maestas said. This will allow them to examine not only larger trends in the American workplace, but also the impact of hostility or hazardous workplaces over time, in terms of things like turnover, productivity and health.

“My idea here is to ask, ‘What role do working conditions play?’ It’s not just a matter of economic performance in U.S., but also the health and well-being of the American worker,” Maestas said. “We’re talking about recognizing that jobs can be really stressful for a lot of people and impact their physical well-being, as well as their emotional well-being. We work quite a bit, and we don’t have a lot of control over when we work.”

Despite the positives, hostile work environments are still a common occurrence for large swaths of the workforce. And a majority feel, at the very least, uncomfortable. These findings bring with them an imperative to change how we see things in the workplace, said Joel Klein, a certified professional business coach and producer of BizTank.

“If people feel that their environment is hostile, whether they know it or not, their work is likely to suffer, and the success of the company is at jeopardy,” Klein said. “The less this is spoken about, the more a hostile environment becomes a topic that is too normalized to be addressed, leaving people unhappy in their jobs constantly.”

Fortunately, Klein said, there are ways for both employers and employees to address when hostility is bubbling under the surface. Resolving these issues before they grow beyond control or to a tipping point is essential to maintaining a functional work environment with happy and productive employees.

“Employers can take courses, speak to HR or seek counsel to help to alleviate the company’s hostile culture,” Klein said. “Employees, although difficult to do, should speak up to a human resource professional at the company or someone in upper management that they can trust. It’s important that the suffering doesn’t go unnoticed or you will just have resentful employees.”

These types of relationships can boost employee satisfaction and engagement, and it shows. “Relationships matter because they help us feel connected, making us more motivated and productive,” Catherine Fisher, LinkedIn’s senior director of global integrated marketing and communications, wrote in a blog post. “It’s much easier to share feedback with someone if you have built up a solid rapport, or ask someone for advice if you have invested in the relationship.”

The research showed that employees increasingly value a positive social and cultural environment at work, nearly as much as good compensation. About 36 percent of workers say they look forward to going to work when they work with a friend, and 31 percent feel stronger and more valued. The researchers found that people with a best friend at work are 7 times more likely to be fully engaged and productive. On the flipside, isolated workers tend to harbor negative emotions which can be counterproductive and damaging to that employee’s contributions to the overall team. An engaging, friendly environment is key to reaching out to those employee’s who would otherwise find themselves isolated and disconnected from the larger group.

Workplace friendships don’t just stay in the workplace, either. After work hours 59 percent of office friends communicate face-to-face, 50 percent speak with one another via a messaging app, and 42 percent interact on social media. Work friends, then, are often real life friends. Translating that support to the workplace can be vital for many employees.

“I’m not suggesting we all start texting our managers at any hour about our latest crush or favorite new shirt, but it does indicate that our growing workforce wants to have more of a connection,” Fisher wrote.

Managers can do their part as well to foster an inclusive social environment at work. By leveling with workers not just as subordinates, but taking a real interest in their lives, managers can begin to foster the type of culture that values social bonding. Fisher offered several tips to help managers who aren’t comfortable with becoming too personal with their employees, while also helping to ensure their millennial employees feel connected:

  • Don’t limit conversations to email or formal meetings. Take awalking meeting. Walking meetings are part of LinkedIn’s culture, and they are popular because people tend to relax during a walk, which allows for a more open and creative discussion. Plus, not having a phone or computer interrupt you every second allows you to be more focused on the person you are talking to, and ultimately more connected, Fisher said.
  • Take an interest in their personal lives. While you may not want to give relationship advice, you should have an interest in your teammates as people. Take a few minutes during every one-on-one meeting to connect on a personal level. If your colleague always jets out with her yoga mat, ask her about it. Work is only a part of who people are. If you get to know people’s other passions, it may give you a glimpse into what motivates them.
  • Congratulate, share and like. A simple gesture on social media can do wonders for employee morale. Think how great it feels to get “a job well done” email from your boss, and then imagine having the same recognition shared with your network. Even the best business phone won’t get you very far if it’s always running out of juice. Android Oreo is expected to help your smartphone run longer by setting strict limits on what applications can do while they’re running in the background.

Specifically, the software update will cap the number of background services and location updates that can be performed at once, or in a specified period of time, which Google says will help stretch your phone’s daily endurance.

Previously, muting alerts from an Android app was an all or nothing affair. Essentially, the platform will allow you to choose an autofill app as a system-wide provider of auto filing services. That means existing autofill apps will become more reliable and easier to use without the need to fuss with accessibility settings or permissions inside your Android phone’s options.

With Android Oreo, Google maps will communicate with other apps on your phone to help you get where you need to be. Say a client texts you the address of a restaurant where you plan to meet for lunch. Instead of copying and pasting that address into Google Maps, you’ll simply tap the address to instantly open the maps app, complete with turn-by-turn directions.

Gesture controls could prove to be a small, timesaver in Android Oreo. The feature will let users trigger actions in Android by drawing out shapes on screen with their finger. “You do have to be careful that [the test results] don’t become a form of segregation. You have to be careful that you’re not stereotyping,” she said. “If your culture is not where you can support that in a healthy way, I don’t recommend you bring it on board. There are probably other things you should clean up first.”

Working remotely is becoming more and more popular, which means that leadership now happens virtually for many teams. Whether an on-site manager works with remote employees or the leaders work remotely themselves, leading people you don’t see face-to-face every day requires a slightly different skill set. When you’re working across time zones and everyone’s interacting from behind their screens, communication becomes even more paramount.

Training leaders to manage remote workers effectively is vital to the success of any remote work program, according to Sara Sutton Fell, CEO and founder of FlexJobs. In general, a remote leader’s focus needs to be managing based on results and processes rather than face time, which is so often relied upon in traditional office settings.

Sutton Fell and other leaders of remote workforces offered their best advice on developing managers who work effectively with dispersed teams.

One of the most useful areas of remote leadership training is proactive communication practices amongst teams and colleagues, said Sutton Fell.

“Proactive communication – taking the initiative to reach out when an idea, question or challenge comes up, rather than waiting to be asked or waiting for a scheduled meeting – can really help to develop a more transparent, open management process, as well as build trust and prevent problems from going unnoticed,” she said.

“It’s exponentially harder for a remote leader to manage a team, compared with a leader who is managing a team in person,” added Phil Shawe, co-founder and co-CEO of translation services company TransPerfect. “To manage a team from a remote location, it’s best to make a strong effort to keep in touch with that employee.”

Leaders can proactively communicate by holding regular and individual meetings specifically to address questions and help solve problems (not just to give a laundry list of updates), and by setting guidelines so all team members know which communication method – email, phone, IM, video conference, etc. – to use in certain circumstances. For instance, Shawe advised against using email to convey “feelings” or any important updates that might invite a lot of follow-up questions.

Bryan Miles, CEO of Belay, added that remote leaders must also learn to communicate the “why” of important tasks and projects more than the “what,” “when” and “how.”

“When the leader is not accessible, any hardworking adults can fill in the blank of the ‘what,’ ‘when’ and ‘how’ when they know the ‘why,'” Miles said.

Another big piece of the puzzle is training leaders to translate the company’s culture for their remote team members. Shawe noted that creating a culture that fosters true leadership is hard enough to do when you’re in the same office as someone, and it gets harder the more remote the team becomes.

When Sutton Fell started FlexJobs as a remote company, she was very conscientious in considering how to translate the best traditional office elements and activities to a virtual environment. She advised reaching out to employees regularly to engage in casual conversations – like water-cooler conversations that might happen in the physical office.

Whether it’s once a month, once a quarter or twice a year, Shawe said remote leaders should get on the plane to attend a meeting at the company headquarters. This way, they will be able to interact with the rest of their team in person and receive sufficient training for the skills they need. In addition to this, remote leaders should use common conference (industry or internal training) to increase face-to-face opportunities.

Sutton Fell said leadership training needs to focus on “best practices,” regardless of whether the leader is remote or on-site.

“Successful leaders focus on communication and culture, challenge and empower their team members, focus on short- and long-term strategy, and the list can go on,” she said. “These are all the same approaches that I’ve used to lead in on-site roles.”
